Hi. I have the installation manual. I'm struggling to find the following setup, as I am unfamiliar with mx. I have setup ispconfig to receive mail. e.g. [email protected]
I can change the mx records with the dns register but I'm not sure to what. It wont allow me to put an IP address.
So if my domain is example.com, what do I put in the mx record?
    The three fields are
Host name: I assume this is blank
Priority: A number, at the moment 30
Result: This I am stuck on. At the moment the default is the hosts own server.
    Thanks

    the mx-records points to a hostname (mx.example.com) and the hostname has an a-record (mx.eample.com - 1.2.3.4)

Thanks. Apparently I need a domain for the mail server like I would need a domain for anything else so I'll have to buy one.

You need a real domian but not one just for the mail server, the hostname should always be a subdomain, so if you have a domain already then just add a a-record for a subdomain of that domain and point it to the mailserver as florian suggested.
