I am a newby. I have an old Thinkpad. I cannot install ubuntu because my bios is too old (<2000). Is there any way I can update my bios?

Does anyone know if there is a version of Linux that will run on a 1999 bios?

In 1999 I used Redhat 6.0. I had a cd drive and my bios could boot from it.
You probably need a 4gig hard drive though the install takes 500mb and
16mb of ram though 32mb will work better. I think a concern is the amount
of memory your video card has. I think at least a video card with at least
1mb of memory is needed to support a 800 x 600 resolution. That is the
problem with newer distros, they are much more demanding for video. This
is a link to some of the legacy rpms for Redhat 6.0. Also some earlier versions
of Slax (smaller version of Slackware) will also work.
