This tutorial on setting up a web server based on Mandriva 2007 is excellent! I learned a great deal.

I only have one problem... when I follow the instructions on getting MySQL running and I execute the command /etc/init.d/mysqld start I don't get the expected response from the server. What I get is:

    Starting MySQL: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [FAILED]

I'm not sure why, as I've followed the tutorial right from the beginning. Any ideas what could be causing me problems that didn't get mentioned in the tutorial?

I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the MySQL rmps and when the install was complete, and Mandriva tried to start the MySQL server, I saw this message:

MySQL manager or server PID file could not be found! [FAILED]
    Starting MySQL . . . . . [FAILED]

Any suggestions as to how I can get MySQL running?

Do you get any errors in your syslog or messages log? I'am not sure if Mandriva has a separate logfile for mysql, if you find one in /var/log/ or a subfolder, have a look in this logfile too.
