I am a complete newb to linux. I would like a a description of the different linux brands out there and what are their advantages and disadvantages.
I will either load it up on my laptop or do a new desktop build.
What worried me is I have heard of some problems with wireless connectivity using linux. I booted from a ubuntu cd and couldn't get my wireless to work.
    Anyhoo, I appreciate any input!

If you want to install a Linux desktop, I'd go for Ubuntu. If you need a server, try Debian.

More recent server hardware might require a more recent version of Debian and Ubuntu Edgy Eft might then be the right choice. I run all my servers with Ubuntu 6.10. Also, see other threads in this forum if you have e.g. a Dell 860. Works with Ubuntu 6.10, apparently does not work with Debian......

I can 'see' the device in networking, I can activate it, but it stays disabled.

Desktop Ubuntu, just ion one word fantastic :).

For my main server I use CentOS 4. For my homeserver I use Ubuntu.
