I have a DNS redirect from my main domain name holder. i.e. portal.xxxxx.co.uk 212.xxx.xxx.xxx When I ping and tracert from my external machine (ping portal.xxx.co.uk) it gets to the address. But when I try in a web browser it fails..... If I try on my SUSE server it works fine.... Any Idease
What do you mean with "DNS-Redirect"? When did you do that "redirect"? You made a change to the DNS-Zone so the data will just get updated on some caching DNS-Servers (like provider DNS-Servers) after the TTL fo the zone ends. So if you explicitly say SuSe in the second case, I guess you have a Windowsbox in the first test? If so, try an ipconfig /flushdns and then try to lookup the name again with nslookup.
Well the last time I changed any dns records was about 3 months ago and the portal was working till a couple of weeks ago. I think if I bounce the box it would be fixed but I was trying to find an answer before I do that. I tried the ping and tracert on a new machine this morning so I dont think its got any dns records to use....
It always uses any dns record if you ping / tracert the DNS-Name. If you ping the IP then I do not get the problem...
Sorry, I work in a large IT company with 3-4 Juniper devices between me and the internet and one of them was blocking my connection. Sorry
