postfix on mac (snow leopard) / php mail() won't work (Operation timed out…)

    Hello everyone!

    After hours and hours of research on this (it does appear to be quite an issue)... it still won't work.

    I already tried with changes to main.cf, master.cf, php.ini, org.postfix.master...

    For main.cf it was suggested to set "myhostname = host.domain.tld" to something one has control over, which I don't (so, I set it to the mailserver I use with my mailclient, but I clearly don't have any say there). Everything I tried telnetting to (e.g. telnet some-IP 25) refused to answer over port 25 (except localhost, which doesn't help much). They can be accessed via other ports (which I set accordingly in my mailclient but can't for postfix - as shows the mail.log)

    I've also uncommented the line

    "submission inet n - n - - smtpd"

    In master.cf, which was meant to enable other ports (or another port) besides 25 - but in my mail.log file there are still entries like the following (I have edited the name of the mailserver):

    So, it does try to use port 25 and I can't figure out how to prevent (or rather change) that.

    I also tried it with my local firewall switched off (just to make sure it wasn't that) - this didn't change anything.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    So you try to connect to remote mail servers on a different port (not 25)?

    And, yes, I did try to use a different port (995 worked with all tested adresses), with telnet.
    I read that uncommenting the line
    "submission inet n - n - - smtpd"

    "995 inet n - n - - smtpd"
    in the same file. Neither did the trick.
    The mail.log still reported rows and rows of failed attempts to get through port 25... like the following (with various servers but always the same port)

    Either I had done it wrong or something else is out of order.

    Is this romulus.metanet.ch one of your servers where Postfix should run on port 995? BTW, port 995 is used for POP3S.

    Yes, it is. Thanks for the info about port 995! (I did find it -somewhere- in my mailclient-properties)
