This is a fresh install of ISPConfig on CentOS 6.5 x64 following The Perfect Server Howto and this is the only thing between now and going live.

I wish I understood this stuff more, I've been googling for a couple of days and I have searched this forum, but either couldn't find what I'm looking for, or it really doesn't exist yet.

I am able to recieve emails (at least the initial "Welcome to your new account" email), but am unable to send.

    The log shows:
Jan 4 07:34:25 localhost postfix/smtpd[11273]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[IP Hidden]: 553 5.7.1 <valid ispconfig user email>: Sender address rejected: not owned by user valid ispconfig user email; from=<valid ispconfig user email> to=<valid external recipient email> proto=ESMTP helo=<[192.168.1.7]>

    # Global Postfix configuration file. This file lists only a subset
    # of all parameters. For the syntax, and for a complete parameter
    # list, see the postconf(5) manual page (command: "man 5 postconf").
    #
    # For common configuration examples, see BASIC_CONFIGURATION_README
    # and STANDARD_CONFIGURATION_README. To find these documents, use
    # the command "postconf html_directory readme_directory", or go to
    # http://www.postfix.org/.
    #
    # For best results, change no more than 2-3 parameters at a time,
    # and test if Postfix still works after every change.

    # SOFT BOUNCE
    #
    # The soft_bounce parameter provides a limited safety net for
    # testing. When soft_bounce is enabled, mail will remain queued that
    # would otherwise bounce. This parameter disables locally-generated
    # bounces, and prevents the SMTP server from rejecting mail permanently
    # (by changing 5xx replies into 4xx replies). However, soft_bounce
    # is no cure for address rewriting mistakes or mail routing mistakes.
    #
    #soft_bounce = no

    # The queue_directory specifies the location of the Postfix queue.
    # This is also the root directory of Postfix daemons that run chrooted.

    #
    data_directory = /var/lib/postfix

    # QUEUE AND PROCESS OWNERSHIP
    #
    # The mail_owner parameter specifies the owner of the Postfix queue
    # and of most Postfix daemon processes. Specify the name of a user
    # account THAT DOES NOT SHARE ITS USER OR GROUP ID WITH OTHER ACCOUNTS
    # AND THAT OWNS NO OTHER FILES OR PROCESSES ON THE SYSTEM. In
    # particular, don't specify nobody or daemon. PLEASE USE A DEDICATED

    # other configuration parameters.
    #
    #myhostname = host.domain.tld
    #myhostname = virtual.domain.tld

    #mydomain = domain.tld

    # SENDING MAIL
    #
    # The myorigin parameter specifies the domain that locally-posted
    # mail appears to come from. The default is to append $myhostname,
    # which is fine for small sites. If you run a domain with multiple
    # machines, you should (1) change this to $mydomain and (2) set up
    # a domain-wide alias database that aliases each user to
    # [email protected].
    #
    # For the sake of consistency between sender and recipient addresses,

    # parameter also controls delivery of mail to user@[ip.address].
    #

    # proxy or network address translation unit. This setting extends
    # the address list specified with the inet_interfaces parameter.

    # compatible delivery agent that lookups all recipients in /etc/passwd
    # and /etc/aliases or their equivalent.
    #
    # The default is $myhostname + localhost.$mydomain. On a mail domain
    # gateway, you should also include $mydomain.

    #
    # The local_recipient_maps parameter specifies optional lookup tables
    # with all names or addresses of users that are local with respect
    # to $mydestination, $inet_interfaces or $proxy_interfaces.
    #
    # If this parameter is defined, then the SMTP server will reject
    # mail for unknown local users. This parameter is defined by default.
    #
    # To turn off local recipient checking in the SMTP server, specify
    # local_recipient_maps = (i.e. empty).
    #
    # The default setting assumes that you use the default Postfix local
    # delivery agent for local delivery. You need to update the
    # local_recipient_maps setting if:
    #
    # - You define $mydestination domain recipients in files other than
    # /etc/passwd, /etc/aliases, or the $virtual_alias_maps files.
    # For example, you define $mydestination domain recipients in
    # the $virtual_mailbox_maps files.
    #
    # - You redefine the local delivery agent in master.cf.
    #
    # - You redefine the "local_transport" setting in main.cf.
    #
    # - You use the "luser_relay", "mailbox_transport", or "fallback_transport"
    # feature of the Postfix local delivery agent (see local(8)).

    # Details are described in the LOCAL_RECIPIENT_README file.
    #
    # Beware: if the Postfix SMTP server runs chrooted, you probably have
    # to access the passwd file via the proxymap service, in order to
    # overcome chroot restrictions. The alternative, having a copy of
    # the system passwd file in the chroot jail is just not practical.

    # TRUST AND RELAY CONTROL

    # The mynetworks parameter specifies the list of "trusted" SMTP
    # clients that have more privileges than "strangers".
    #
    # In particular, "trusted" SMTP clients are allowed to relay mail
    # through Postfix. See the smtpd_recipient_restrictions parameter
    # in postconf(5).
    #
    # You can specify the list of "trusted" network addresses by hand
    # or you can let Postfix do it for you (which is the default).
    #
    # By default (mynetworks_style = subnet), Postfix "trusts" SMTP
    # clients in the same IP subnetworks as the local machine.
    # On Linux, this does works correctly only with interfaces specified
    # with the "ifconfig" command.
    #
    # Specify "mynetworks_style = class" when Postfix should "trust" SMTP
    # clients in the same IP class A/B/C networks as the local machine.
    # Don't do this with a dialup site - it would cause Postfix to "trust"
    # your entire provider's network. Instead, specify an explicit
    # mynetworks list by hand, as described below.
    #
    # Specify "mynetworks_style = host" when Postfix should "trust"
    # only the local machine.
    #
    #mynetworks_style = class

    # which case Postfix ignores the mynetworks_style setting.

    # Specify an explicit list of network/netmask patterns, where the
    # mask specifies the number of bits in the network part of a host
    # address.

    # The relay_domains parameter restricts what destinations this system will
    # relay mail to. See the smtpd_recipient_restrictions description in
    # postconf(5) for detailed information.

    # By default, Postfix relays mail
    # - from "trusted" clients (IP address matches $mynetworks) to any destination,
    # - from "untrusted" clients to destinations that match $relay_domains or
    # subdomains thereof, except addresses with sender-specified routing.
    # The default relay_domains value is $mydestination.
    #
    # In addition to the above, the Postfix SMTP server by default accepts mail
    # that Postfix is final destination for:
    # - destinations that match $inet_interfaces or $proxy_interfaces,
    # - destinations that match $mydestination
    # - destinations that match $virtual_alias_domains,
    # - destinations that match $virtual_mailbox_domains.
    # These destinations do not need to be listed in $relay_domains.

    # (parent) domain appears as lookup key.

Your stuff really does rock, though, Falko!! Thank you so much for providing such a kick-ass product!

Are you able to send Email to a local address? If yes, then sour problem is most likely related to the fact that the server is not live yet.

Nice to hear that you like my software ISPConfig :)

:O If I got the wrong person, or perhaps ISPConfig is bigger than just one person, sorry.

I do love your software, Till!

Using SquirrelMail, I am able to send email to any address I want. Using ThunderBird receiving mail works just fine, but fails with the aforementioned error. I think that it is a postfix auth problem, but I don't know how to fix it :(

    Thanks in advance!!

Thanks :) I'am the original author and project manager of the ISPConfig Software and Falko is writing most if ur Tutorials :) But I'am not the only developer, there are several other users helping in ISPConfg development and if Falko has some free time, he contributes code as well.

Are there any other errors in the mail.log file, e.g. sasl errors? May you please post all lines that get added to mail.log wen you try to send a email to a external address?

Are you able to send a email with thnderbird to the address of the account that you created in thunderbird (a email to yourself)?

Regarding master.cf, please change these lines:

    Code:
    smtp inet n - n - - smtpd
    submission inet n - n - - smtpd

Edited because I forgot to answer:
There weren't before, but this TLS issue below is now showing up. saslauthd is running and appears to be fine.
Shown below, and this occurs when sending an email to any address, not just local ones, but only from an external client like Thunderbird.
No, but I can from the local client SquirrelMail, shown below.

Well, that certainly changed things. Now the log looks like this

I followed the howto religiously, the only issue came when I was installing mailman and that was because the aliases db hadn't been created yet. I also read that the dovecot.conf was pointing to /etc/dovecot-sql.conf when it should have been pointing at /etc/dovecot/dovecot-sql.conf but I don't see how that would produce these results.

    Thanks again for your help!!

    An update:
I ran the ISPConfig's /tmp/ispconfig3_install/install/update.php and updated the services, configurations, etc, made sure the suggested changes were taking place.

I also regenerated keys and certs for postfix/dovecot and made sure to use the fqdn of the server (not the hostname)

This one seems a little telling as there are some TLS issues in the beginning and then the "not owned by user" thing comes up again.

    Code:

    Public vs. NAT IP Address

FYI, I have a very-similar configuration to yours (CentOS 6.5 x86_64 with dovecot and Apache following the Perfect Server HowTo). The main difference is that I built my server on a public IP address since I've had a lot of grief in the past with building my server on a NAT IP address and then expecting things to work OK. So the first thing I did before building my server was to obtain a public IP address and ensure that Reverse DNS was properly build to point back to my server name at my public IP address.

With that said I have not had any large issues with getting other mail servers to accept my output email messages. AOL bounced me due to too many reports on my (brand new) IP address, but I rather think they confused my Comcast Business IP address with a general home user IP address, which isn't the least bit fair as I have my incoming email filtered by Postini/Google and nobody else can get to port 25 due to iptables filtering (as a Cisco professional routing engineer, if you needed iptables help I could fix you right up; iptables has a lot in common with router access lists).

Anyway, I was concerned about this part of your error message: "helo=<[192.168.1.7]>"

That doesn't seem to be the correct "helo" message. If you are trying to connect to something outside of your own LAN, then in fact that IP address isn't owned by you when you get to the other side. You might want to take a look at that.

Good eye, but that's from Thunderbird out of my home. The server is sitting straight on the internet, with its own static IP and is able to send email to any of my other addresses (from SquirrelMail sitting locally on the box) just fine, including my hotmail address and gmail.

It's when I'm trying to send from outside the box, not from localhost(127.0.0.1) that this is happening. As in, logging onto Postfix from home, authing, handing the message over, and logging out. Dovecot does all this just fine, Postfix is being elusive.

    Thanks for the consideration, though.

Out of time limits, I took the plunge and put it all live.

I HATE putting it up live before it's all working, but here it is.

I moved it live and not it's OK, I can send, receive, et al.

Till, Falko, can either of you Linuxheads tell me why?

    I'd surely appreciate it!!

I still love you people, with no end. Rainbows and happiness, the hot girl that once friendzoned you, I wish you guys everything.

That looks like that that there's maybe a problem with your SMTP Server configuration?! Just a guess.

I had similar problems once and changed the SMTP to use the SMTP Server of mi ISP, which is an Open Relay Server. Using several Domains, each with it's own Mail-Server Domain and set my Desktop and Laptop Mail Client's TheBat Pro for all to mail.mydomain.com (while mydomain.com is the actual Domain name). Only in ISPConfig I had set in System ->Server Config under the Mail tap the Relay Host to the SMTP of my ISP. That just works fine for send an receive Mails from any location.

By the way, I didn't use the DNS Zones in ISPConfig, because I use 1 static/public IP only, I use A Records via the Domain Registras and their Nameservers to point to my static IP.

There is a problem with the ssl cert from postfix. It seems to be broken. You can create a new ssl cert for postfix like this:

    Code:
    cd /etc/postfix/tls
openssl req -new -outform PEM -out smtpd.cert -newkey rsa:4096 -nodes -keyout smtpd.key -keyform PEM -days 3650 -x509

If it works from localhost, then the smtp server setup is corect and working fine.

Have you checked your dns records? Is the mx record of your domain pointing to the hostname of your server, does the hostname of the server exist in dns, does the external IP of the server ahs a reverse record? s there any firewall in front of your server or a router, which might block some connections?

Ok, now I don't see the TLS error in the log, thanks!!
I've moved the server to fully live in hopes that it was an issue of being quasi-up. All DNS records point to this server now, just like they did to the old, CentOS 5/ISPConfig server (that worked totally great, thanks!!) Yes, MX does point to this server, it does have a DNS entry that can be dug at jechosting.com.

No firewall or router, this machine sits directly on the internet.

Reverse DNS comes up with a hostname that Comcast assigned (this is a business account with a static IP) so I've fixed my hostname to match that.

    The maillog is down to
    Code:

Ok, I don't know if this is the way it's supposed to be or not, but in master.cf:
    Code:
    submission inet n - - - - smtpd
      -o smtpd_tls_security_level=encrypt
      -o smtpd_sasl_auth_enable=yes
      -o smtpd_sasl_type=dovecot
      -o smtpd_sasl_path=private/auth
      -o smtpd_sasl_security_options=noanonymous
      -o smtpd_sasl_local_domain=$myhostname
      -o smtpd_client_restrictions=permit_sasl_authenticated,reject
      -o smtpd_sender_login_maps=hash:/etc/postfix/virtual
      -o smtpd_sender_restrictions=[B][SIZE="4"][COLOR="Red"]reject_sender_login_mismatch[/COLOR][/SIZE][/B]
      -o smtpd_recipient_restrictions=reject_non_fqdn_recipient,reject_unknown_recipient_domain,permit_sasl_authenticated,reject

was causing the issue. I don't know if it's a big security hole to take that out, but without it, I can send email again just fine.

If you want to allow your users to send with sender addresses that differ from their mailbox login, then its ok to remove that.

As a sidenote: I guess you replaced email addresses a bit unclear in the log lines:

    Jan 7 08:34:05 host postfix/smtpd[16948]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[my.home.ip]: 553 5.7.1 <myvalidemail@ispconfig>: Sender address rejected: not owned by user myvalidemail@ispconfig; from=<myvalidemail@ispconfig> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<[192.168.1.7]>
    ....
    Jan 7 08:37:44 host dovecot: imap-login: Login: user=<myvalidemail@ispconfig>, method=PLAIN, rip=my.home.ip, lip=isp.configs.ip.address, mpid=17054, TLS

as the addresses in the line must have been different if the issue was caused by "smtpd_sender_restrictions=reject_sender_login_mismatch" becase in the log you posted is the sender address and login address the same.

IMAP/Dovecot works fine. That was the whole of the important bits of the log, before that was just after I restarted dovecot/postfix/saslauthd and there were just startup messages.

Anyway, it's running fine for now, I'll ponder what to do later, for now, I'm going to give it a rest.

Thanks again for your help and for ISPConfig!!

Gruss Gott! (I don't have the umlauts and the backwards B on my keyboard)
