Alright so I have my server working on my network so that I can access it as http://www.compuville.org. Now, I purchased that domain and would like to actually use it so that the internet would publicly be rerouted to my server. How do I make this possible?

The easiest way is to use managed DNS from the company where you registered the domain and create there a DNS A- Record for your domain that points to your server IP address.

so are you saying i should use DNS A and just point it to my IP address? But I'm using DSL and my IP address is dynamic and will change. I'm a little confused when it comes down to all this domain stuff, other than that the server is up and running perfectly.

I want to be able to get this up and then run multiple domain names online.

This is not ideal in any way to run a server, but a solution would be to get a dyndns.org domain and then make your own domain a CNAME of your dyndns.org domain.

well, you are just saying that because a server should probably have static ip's etc etc dedicated line's etc etc... this of course is by no means a server i am going to be charging to host people... just i will make websites and my friends and acquaintances will be able make sites on it...

so right now compuville.org does point to my server and it works fine, but yeah the day my IP changes I will have to re-update my domain...

That's why I suggested the CNAME thing. :)

umm.. well from what i can see... you can only use CNAME with a subdomain of my domain... so, once again, i still don't know what I am supposed to do :-(

Get yourself a dyndns.org domain that points to your public IP address, and then make your other domain a CNAME of that dyndns.org domain.
