That depends on your email client and not the server. There must be a setting for it in the options of your email client software.
You're right! How dumb of me I really thought that this was a automatic setting when you use imap. I enabled "Items verwijderen wanneer u online tussen mappen schakelt" (Delete Items when switching online between folders) in Outlook 2007.
What do they use on Gmail servers? When you delete messages on Gmail imap there they get deleted directly.
