I am currently using an external company to manage my DNS. As I am using ISPConfig I want to start managing the my name servers through this. I currently have 3 replicated web-servers and I was think of running them as name servers too. Do you think this would be a problem? What kind of resources does BIND use? Cheers
bind is fairly low resource. We have one server that due to a misconfiguration I won't go into, became the sole nameserver for a few hundred servers in one of our datacentres. Then I foolishly dropped the ram down to 512mb. Even at that everything seemed fine for a while but occasionally (once or twice a day) we would get alerts as DNS lookups on some servers would time out, although the nameserver itself never showed any signs of strain. Bumping it up to 1gb ram solved that problem (restoring redundancy to allow use of multiple nameservers is an even better solution but that took longer to implement) We've rebuilt our entire DNS platform, but in our previous setup we had 3 servers with 1gb RAM each acting as nameservers for several hundred servers and authoritave nameservers for about 2000 domains, never heard a peep out of them.
