I've installed CentOS 5 and ISPconfig. Nothing on the server yet. No websites, no nothing except those 2 on the server. I m checking the "ps -aux", I m seeing same processes are running 5 times each. What's happening and what should I do to prevent that happens? I've rebooted the server and I see the same thing. How do configure or what to do? What's mingetty? it shows 5 times. root 304 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 04:04 0:00 [kpsmoused] root 324 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? S< 04:04 0:00 [kmirrord] root 329 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? The output of ps aux is fine. It is normal that the daemons spawn more then one process when they start. The number of processes is defined in the config file of every daemon, but you should not change this.
Depending on load, you may actually need to up the httpd threads, tho' with newer apache2 I haven't had to do that yet. 1.3 had issues here, and you had to "tune" it, 2 relieves that by being a bit smarter about threads. Your seeing multiple threads (separate process) to help avoid having visitors wait while a new handler loads. Almost all daemons do this, particularly if the system gets a heavy loads. I used to gauge how busy the server was by how many httpd daemons are running. You'll see a definate correlation between processor load and the number of daemons. However if it needs to have 20 or 30 running, it needs it. Don't skimp or you'll get complaints.
