Hey everyone I'm new here, so I hope i am posting in the correct forum. I've been reading through a lot of the guides, but i still have a question. I've just purchased a RACKABLE System 16 Maxtor 500GB Drives Tyan S2882 MB and I'm trying to set it up for data backup service I want to offer. What i want to do is use this to offer customers off site data backup. I'm going to use CentOS as an Operating system. I'm thinking i need to have a main server that handles all the connections to the server and allows customers to log into the server with their account. How should i set this up? Should i use FTP and give clients an account? I want the clients to be able to have some kind of control panel where they can handle their data backups. Are there any guides on this site that could help me out with this? Thank you, Chase
Thank you for your response. This is exactly the type of software i was looking for. When i install this i only need to install this on my SAN machine, correct? Then i would set up a second machine to control who was is coming into the network. This would be a multifuntional machine that would allow dns, websites and also ftp, which i'm thinking would be a good method for clients be able to upload their files. Does this setup sound right? I'm completely new to this. I just want to make sure I'm grasping everything. I'm trying to follow along the centOS 5.2 ISPconfig 3. Right now i'm having problems trying to acess the /ect folder. In the guide its telling me to modify the /etc/fstab but when i type vi /ect/fstab, i get a new directory and a blank text file in vi. I'm logged in like this [root@server1 /]#. but whenever i try to edit a file inside the /ect directory i always get a new text file with nothing it.
so what you are saying is that i need to type /ect/fstab I need to have a comma in the command like this: vi /ect/fstab, is that correct, or am i not following you?
omg man are you kidding me i feel so stupid right now!! Thank you for pointing that out to me! But i have anyother question. I've done my installation of openfiler now. Will i need to set up another server to be able to have clients access it? As in like setting up a web server and creating LVM's on my SANs server for the web server to point to? Or will openfiler do it all for me without a need for the web server. I would also like to offer web hosting too, with that how would i go about getting my SAN's storage space to be available on a seperate computer. Is there a tutorial for that here? Thank you for all your help!
The openfiler is just a storage device, it is not a web server. All the filer does is manage your storage and allow you to access it via nfs, cifs, smb, iscsi.
Okay, so i will need to set up a web server for clients to be able to access my my sans server. With ISPconfig I would think i would be able to set up different accounts and control the amount of storage space they have. Is this the right setup? doing a web server and then having my SAN's attached to my web server? Is there a program out there that will allow my users to have a graphical interface to back up files? Thanks everyone for your help
