    Hi,

I read your page on how to enable .htaccess in Linux and I made the changes, but I can't figure out how to save. I pressed :x but it's not working. I am using putty to make these changes. The problem is that I am using GoDaddy's Virtual Dedicated Server and I'm trying to get .htaccess to work but when I upload a file, it never shows up on the server as if it's being blocked.

I asked GoDaddy and they said that .htaccess was allowed but they will not help me with setting it up.

    Any ideas?

Ok what I can't figure out is the :x part? Once I press ESC to exit Insert mode, do I press SHIFT ; and X at the same time? When I do that, it says "Please enter encryption key" and then enter it again...does that mean it's saved?

I entered my password for the encryption key and it took it...but when I return, none of the changes are saved.

No, not SHIFT. Just press the colon key and afterwards a lowercase x.

Oh WOW do I feel stupid! This whole time I just figured out that the reason my changes were not being saved is because the file was a "read only" AND I was not signed in with root access!

I just got it and .htaccess is now working...hooray! Actually this time I could not get the ;x to work but I used ZZ and it saved.

Thanks again for all of your help....now I know to be signed in with root access.
I'll probably be back with more questions soon, this is an excellent place. I'm a newbie at Linux and this is my first time having a virtual dedicated but I'm doing it for the learning experience...right now I'm just a web designer but I want to further my education on this stuff.
