ok, i'm hoping that some one out there will be kind enough to help me narrow where I made a mistake.

I am using Lenny with obviously ispconfig3, all set up following (to the best of my abilities -at least) the how to guide here. For the most part everything is great but 2 problems that have; 1 - still my own ignorance of what steps now are needed to move forward and 2 - I can not pull the ispconfig control panel or webmail (or anything else for that matter, but those are the only falko mentioned in the guide) using the server name beta.ar3inc.com. I can use the ip all day fine, but as I progress I really want to start setting up a few intranet site and really do not want to use ip address all the time.

So what, where and how should I start checking?

    Thanks.

Did you try to add a "website", and point your domain on your ip's server ?

Well I guess i need to go back and read everything. I thought the server name /webmail or :8080 would work without any tinkering or adding of ispconfig. I have tried any of that yet, because I am still trying to understand the ispconfig control panel a bit better.

To be able to use the server name beta.ar3inc.com to access your server, create a DNS A-Record for beta.ar3inc.com pointing to the IP address of your server in the DNS Server that is authoritive for the domain ar3inc.com. So you dont have to create anything in ispconfig to be able to use the hostname of your server, you missed just to create the dns A-Record in the dns server of your domain provider.

    but I just want intranet.
ahhh... wait maybe i get it. even though I'm planning to use it only on intranet I still use my actual domain update its zone file and dns records then tunnel everything to close everyone else out?
Please forgive my ignorance... but if it works that all my intranet sites will need to be fully qualified domains.
I just want to have basic site ie "time" that will load an app to time stamp actions. another site "list" that will load an app to open a task management system of various projects.

You need fqdn's for all websites as the server name. but these dont have to be officially registered domains, you may use e.g "time.int" or "list.int" (int for internal) but not "time" or "list".

To be able to use a domain name, independantly if it is an official domain or internal domain, your workstation computer has to know it. There are several option:

    a) If you run a dns server within your network, add the internal domains there.
    b) If you use a router that allows you to add local domains in the dns server, then add it there.
    c) add the internal domains to the hosts file on the workstations.
