    Hello all

I'm just wating some guidence on upgrading my server.

Currently I run a stand alone Debian Stretch server
    Linux mx 4.9.0-13-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.228-1 (2020-07-05) x86_64 GNU/Linux
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Debian
    Description: Debian GNU/Linux 9.13 (stretch)
    Release: 9.13
    Codename: stretch
    ISPConfig 3.1.15p3

I'm wanting to change the server to operate as a VPS as the hardware has 32 CPUs and 48G RAM, so it has the resources.

How would I best perform this upgrade given that I believe the migration tool has the limitation of staying within the same OS versions? So I can't migrate from a stretch server to a buster server.

Your comments would be most helpful.

    Regards

    Fred

no, with the migration-tool you can run different OS on the old and the new server.

As Florian mentioned, there is no such limitation. You can even migrate to a different Linux Distribution by using the Migration Tool.

Seems you do not specify what kind of upgrade is this about.
    You mention
so if you want something like Proxmox https://proxmox.com/en/proxmox-ve on that host to then create virtual machine for your ISPConfig host, that can be done. I would take a disk image of the current host, then import that to Proxmox and create a virtual machine from that.
This is a bit complicated and causes a long downtime, so if you have only that one server computer that may be a problem. It would be better if this could be tested and practised so it goes smootly when doing it for real.
