I want to set up an FTP server for some friends and I to use. I'm a n00b to Linux and have no clue what I'm doing when I look at the ProFTPd config file.

I need to set up a server that has 3 user accounts; 1 for administrative duties, 1 for uploading files and 1 for people to download through. I do not want folk other than who I give the account info to be able to download my files.

What do I have to do in my config file to allow that?

Furthermore, what do I need to do to get the ftp server on the internet?

I'm behind a router, I am using Debian Sarge, and I'm using proftpd v 1.2.10.

I'm sorry I'm asking for a lot...but most of the info on the internet I've found assumes you know EVERYTHING about Debian/proftpd.

I suggest you follow this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/proftpd_mysql_virtual_hosting
to get your FTP server up and running.

You have to forward port 21 from your router to your Debian system. Some routers also have special firewall settings for FTP, but that depends on the router...
