Hi, i'm setting up a file server for my office. Having a PC as specification below: Intel i3 2100 3.1Ghz 4GB Ram Asus P8P67LE Motherboard with 6 SATA by intel chipset ATI Graphic Card 4 x 2TB Western Digital AV GP series Additional 4GB or 16GB pendrive (for OS installation) Working environment - this is a centralized file server for 8 computer (4PC, 4 MAC) - storing lots of huge file (photoshop file and illustrator file, might up to few Gig per file) - all gigabit network - all computer connect to the server to access the file and work on it realtime. - This server need to have ability to backup itself off-site (to FTP) Now my question come - what is the best OS i use for the configuration? (Ubuntu, Openfiler or FreeNAS) - i might consider software RAID 10 to get more read/write performance - i'm new to linux, considering UBUNTU server, but really no clue how to install and configure it. - Know how to install Ubuntu Desktop 11.04, but dunno it will suit me or not. - Installed FreeNAS now, performance not really satisfied. i need more expert advice, thanks!
I have been using openfiler for the last couple of weeks in my development environment and have been getting some good results from it I have been using the iSCSI functionality with it for my ESXi testing and considering putting it on some of my production environments But it does handle nfs/smb/cfis shares etc and it has a web interface that is easy to get around and you can configure it to replicate with another server off site there is a good tutorial on this site actually on how to do that http://www.howtoforge.com/openfiler-2.99-active-passive-with-corosync-pacemaker-and-drbd Or http://www.howtoforge.com/openfiler-2.3-active-passive-cluster-heartbeat-drbd-with-offsite-replication-node
