I want to change the connect_timeout for 4 Joomla sites, on my new 16.04 perfect server with mariadb - but things seemed to have changed from mysql on the 14.04 server and I cannot for the life of me find which file I have to edit as there is no etc/mycnf which is what most of the searches through Google mentions and there are serveral */mycnf's in /etc/mysql/

It can be changed Myphpadmin but it reverts back to 10 when server is rebooted.

Could someone point me in the right direction, please?

The "connect_timeout" resets back to 10 seconds because that is the default setting. It is probable that there is not an entry for that value in any of the *.cnf files. The best one to put it in is probably the "mariadb.cnf" file since it is MariaDB and not MySQL.
You can find further help in the man pages for mariadb, the documentation, or this website:
    https://mariadb.com/kb/en/mariadb/server-system-variables/#connect_timeout

Thanks for that I ended up putting it in /etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/50-server.cnf and it seems to work OK, as after looking through the files that was the one with the most configuration options in it.
