The c-client.cf is not needed for ubuntu. The perfect setup for ubuntu is for 32bit, not 64 bit, so file locations may differ. Do you get an error when you run: /etc/init.d/saslauthd start please post the output of the command: netstat -tap

You must always use the username and only the username for authentication, never the email address! So your sasl is working fine.

The visible email address is set in the email client, not on the server and has nothing to do with mail authentication.
