Ok guys, I did a fresh install of linux on an old game system, specs are: amd sempron 3400+ 1 gig corsair ram pc3200 abit fatality motherboard nvidia chipset ati x850xt agp video card sound blaster audigy ls maxtor 80 gig sata So far everything seems to be working fine except my video card, I did the ati prop. driver install but cannot access the control panel, when I click it nothing happens. Also when I run fglrxinfo I get this: display: :0.0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 AGP 1x x86/MMX+/3DNow!+/SSE2 TCL OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 6.5.2 So I took a look at the fglrx install log and this is what I saw: [Message] Kernel Module : Trying to install a precompiled kernel module. [Message] Kernel Module : Precompiled kernel module version mismatched. [Message] Kernel Module : Found kernel module build environment, generating kernel module now. Did you try Envy? With Feisty the open source drivers support a larger number of ATI cards and is more flexible then the prop. driver....However I think the 850 isn't supported by it and Envy is the best way to get ATI drivers installed properly the first time through....
Envy? No I followed this online tutorial: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Feisty_Installation_Guide and it still didn't work, I still get the mesa driver when I run fglrxinfo. Give me a link for envy and I'll try that, can't hurt at this point......LOL
