    I have Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop edition. When I try to update from System > Administration > Updated Manager it takes very long time and it stops without any action even if it continues with the update it is very slow with my high speed internet connection. There is no issue with any other downloads, it is only with the OS update. Because of this is I am not able to update to 8.10. Few months ago I got the Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition CD so I could update. I restarted my dual boot notebook(other OS is Vista) with this CD in the drive. I did not get any option to upgrade. I tried the command Alt+f2 gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade" from the 8.04 desktop with the 8.10 CD in the drive and it did nothing.
    So, please tell me if I am doing anything wrong. Also help me to update to 8.10 using its CD.

    If the update using Internet can be resolved, then I can try that too. I have Firestarter, but it is disabled.

    open a terminal and do

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

    See what it gets you...

    The update or upgrade both just stops

    Thanks for your reply. I tried both the terminal commands, the update or upgrade seems not to respond after 5 or 7%. When I tried the upgrade option, it showed 30 minutes remaining, then suddenly it stopped and after few minutes it showed 20 hours remaining then again it stops for a more than 5 minutes, then it shows 3 hours remaining. It either does nothing or it only shows different times with only few bytes of data been download. This is only with Ubuntu's update or upgrade from the terminal command. There is no issue with other file downloads using my high speed Internet connection. Please do tell me if there might be anything else blocking the download for the update or upgrade.

    Installed Ubuntu 9.04

    Hi Falko,

    Thanks for your reply. Before I saw your message I went ahead and did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04. After this all its updates were installed without any issue.
    To my surprise all my data and desktop settings including the wall paper from Ubuntu 8.04 was there when I logged into Ubuntu 9.04 :) (I did not select the option to format)

    I really got fed up when I was not able to either update or upgrade 8.04, but now I am happy with 9.04. :)
