Hi experts....I have just switched from windows to Linux....installed Fedora 8 on my Dell Inspiron 6400...It seems great....but as I am a new user I am facing some problems...I already tried to find the solution by searching posts on this forum but am not able to find a solution.....my problem is that I also installed Skype 2.0.0.68 & it is not able to detect my webcam

    my lsusb output is below:
    [root@localhost log]# /sbin/lsusb
    Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 413c:8126 Dell Computer Corp. Wireless 355 Bluetooth
    Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
    Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

    Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

I think I already have the propper driver because when I plugin the webcam I see this message in /var/log/messages

Apr 4 21:59:43 localhost kernel: usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif

I think you should wait for Fedora 9 (comes at the end of April). Olli has tried the beta which comes with a new kernel that supports lots of webcams, and with this kernel he was able to get his laptop webcam going (which didn't work on Fedora 8).

But I know that Fedora 8 supports my webcam. I was able to use my webcam when I first installed Fedora8 about 4 days ago but then I messed with something & I was not able to do su...so I re installed fedora 8 & now its not working....I have been doing lots of things after checking a lot of posts on forums but nothing is working :(scribed to entitled - webcam not working with skype - in the Installation/Configuration forum of HowtoForge Forums | HowtoForge - Linux

    Hi Ezy,

you can try the kmod-gspca package from the livna repository - it supports many webcams.

    Code:
    yum install kmod-gspca
    after that reboot your system.

    Best regards,

    Olli

    Hi Olli,

It says already installed....here is the output

    Package kmod-gspca - 1.00.20-9.lvn8.i586 is already installed.
    Nothing to do

But I know this webcam works with Fedora 8 on my laptop as it was working when I first installed Fedora a week ago but then I had to re install fedora because I messed with some thing.

Just to let everybody know that my problem is still not solved. I have tried to check my webcam through ekiga, Camstream, Cheese, skype & amsn...it is not working with any of them...........I am really hopeless & fed up now...

I have even tried to reinstall my driver...there is agood website to help newbies choosing install webcam drivers on linux:
    http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Setting+up+your+webcam+under+Fedora+8

tough my webcam is supported by the driver gspcav1 but It didn't work for me because my problem is diff..may be the porblem is not with Linux may be its with my luck :( ....but may be some one gets lucky.....

what is really pissing me off is that this same webcam was working before but after reinstalling fedora it never worked again......

Is there no one who can help me ????????????
