I want to install webmin on Debian 4.0 Etch Linux.

I looked at the instructions on: http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/Webmin.htm

When I tried the first step:

    #apt-get install webmin webmin-core

It did not work - the following error messages were shown:

    rockstar:/usr/lib/cgi-bin/bugzilla# cd
    rockstar:~# apt-get install webmin webmin-core
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree... Done
Package webmin is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Package webmin has no installation candidate
    rockstar:~#

Note that the error messages about google desktop may not be related - they refer to a failed attempt at installing Google Desktop for Linux. I followed their instructions but it did not work!

    Tried it - doesn't work:

    rockstar:~# dpkg --install webmin_1.360_all.deb
    dpkg: error processing webmin_1.360_all.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    webmin_1.360_all.deb
    rockstar:~#

Downloaded this to /etc/ and /usr/share as indicated. But then what? What should I do next to get it running? Couldn't see any install instructions - please advise.

Come on, don't make a virtue out of complexity or by looking down on people who are new to Linux and not giving help.

Thank you for replying -I've numbered the steps you supplied for discussion purposes:

    Step 1)

    Seems to work.

    2)

    OK...

    BUT:

    3)

Doesn't work - error message: "Connecting to prdownloads.sourceforge.net|66.35.250.217|:80... failed: Connection refused."

HOWEVER, I went onto the next step:

    4)

    - and this seemed to work.

If I put https://rockstar:10000/ in a web browser (as advised by the link you supplied - http://www.webmin.com/deb.html) then I get a log in screen, which, on supplying my root login and password, takes me to another page - a control panel, with the following text:

    System hostname rockstar
    Operating system Debian Linux 4.0
    Webmin version 1.360
Time on server Tue Aug 28 11:10:53 2007
    CPU load averages 0.39 (1 min) 0.36 (5 mins) 0.38 (15 mins)
Real memory 1011.85 MB total, 392.92 MB used

Virtual memory 2.53 GB total, 276 kB used

Local disk space 73.15 GB total, 7 GB used

So Seems like it worked despite step 3) failing - so why did I need step 3) ? Perhaps you could explain what each of the steps are.

    Full output shown below:

Step 3 is failing because you use a wrong link, it should be:
    Code:
    wget http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/webadmin/webmin_1.360_all.deb
Anyway you downloaded the package before so step 3 is not needed.
