    Hi,

I am quite new to Linux and I managed to install unbuntu 7.10 server with apache and php. Furthermore I have a wireless lan connection.
How do I make the pages in /var/www visible to the web by a static ip address. (now the router assigns an ip address and only via this dynamic address the site can be shown. How do I assign a domain name to the static ip address? And make sure this is all visible on the web without being directed to the router. Is this all possible by only using a wireless LAN?

Thanks a lot for your help in advance!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly it would not be the best setup. Wireless can drop frequently and a hardwired connection is always best for servers.

However if you chose to go this route you will need to specify a static IP in your range that is outside the scope of your DHCP server. Log into your router and check your DHCP settings to find out what scope is predefined. Usually its the first 100 addresses or something like that (IE 192.168.0.2 -> 192.168.0.100).

Then set your wireless card to use any IP outside that scope (so if my example above is accurate then say 192.168.0.101 should work).

Now as for getting that to a static REALWORLD IP is a different story. You will have to ask your ISP if they offer static IPs to you on your type of connection. If they do then great. Easy work. If not then you will need to subscribe to a dynIP service.

    Hope that helps!
