Okay, I was using ISPC2 for a few years and it wasn't using the same mail service as ISPC3 uses now. However, all mail was moved over and imported. I believe it was originally mbox and then transferred to mailbox. However, my IMAP cellphone software picks up every directory in vmail and calls it a subfolder of Inbox. I'm thinking there's a bunch of useless crap here that needs to be removed. Thoughts?
I see you have folders/files for Courier and Dovecot. Which POP3/IMAP daemon do you use? How did you import the mails? Did you use imapsync ( http://www.howtoforge.com/how-to-migrate-mailboxes-between-imap-servers-with-imapsync )?
I went from what the default ISPC2 Perfect Install used to the ISPC3 Perfect Install's defaults. I know there was a change in ISPC2 from mbox as I recall. Then, on my upgrade to ISPC3 I moved the mail over. My ISPC3 settings show: courier and maildrop. I didn't use anything special to migrate. I had an old forum post where I was told to copy to the vmail. Per Till: "Recreate the mail accounts in ispconfig 3 on the new server. Then copy the content of the "Maildir" directory on the old server to the corresponding directory /var/vmail/domain.tld/user/ on the new server. Then chown the data to user and group vmail."
You can remove all the *.rc files (these are old procmail recipes used by ISPConfig 2; they aren't used by ISPConfig 3) as well as .user_prefs and .vacation.msg. The dovecot* files can be removed as well because you're using Courier.
Sounds good, thanks Falko! Curiously, why do all of my mail folders fall under Inbox after my ISCP2 -> 3 switch? Folders look as follows: INBOX | - Sent | - Drafts | - Trash Whereas it used to be: | - Inbox | - Sent | - Trash ... Just wondering...
Thast the normal behaviour when courier is used. I guess you had dovecot on the other server? Normally you can configure this also in your mail client, by setting a prefix for INBOX.
Yes, courier is the default on this ISPC3 configuration. The ISPC2 I came from was dovecot. Would dovecot be better to switch back to?
ISPConfig uses courier as default on debian as it offers more features like mail traffic accounting. If you dont need mail traffic stats, you can use dovecot as well. On some distributions that do not have courier packages, we use dovecot as default as there is no alternative available. In general courier is as good as dovecot. They only differ in a fech technical details like the inbox format. You should be able to set this in your mailclient. If you want to switch to dovecot, you would have to modify all inbox folders manually as the storage path for the mails differs.
