well that was the mail.log error, the one thunderbird display is: An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: 4.7.1 <[email protected]>: Relay access denied. Please check the message recipient [email protected] and try again.

where it says 'flags' there should be a space in front of that. Why? Not sure, but you won't deliver email via dovecot if there is no whitepsace in front of 'flags'. So, open up your master.cf and put a space there, restart postfix.
Also, this is part of my configuration. I created a tutorial on using postfix+dovecot+mysql+squirrelmail+roundcube+SOGo. This works for me everytime. Remember to add the whitespace in front of 'flags'.
Thanks for your reply mate, Using courier with this, messed something up when setting this up, think I followed two different tutorials! I think I'm using cyrus somewhere, looking in the file, the cyrus part is commented out... any idea what would be there instead of the dovecot part?? Thanks
You could just install dovecot and it takes it's place? I never really got into cyrus, heard too many horror stories.
setting up email servers is always a nightmare for me! Could I just install it or would I have to purge courier and cyrus? I'll try it though, not getting anywhere with this for days!
You have cyrus installed? You posted here in the ispconfig 3 forum, do you have ispconfig 3 instaled? I just ask because ispconfig 3 does not even support cyrus. Setting up a mailserver with ispconfig is quite easy, just follow one of our perfect server guides to install it. You always have to start from a clean system, otherwise it wont work.
Yeah, was just following instructions from random places. I installed dovecot and now, I can see my main in vmail/domain/user/new but can't see it in mail client is there a setting in dovecot I can set as for some reason incoming mail isn't going into /Maildir Can see sent folder... Still having the sasl authentication failure! I'm quite stuck now!
