This one breaks all wordpress urls (first page works but the other links doesn't). I will try to remove the lines falko said and report.
falko's solution works, but authentication on stats page is broken. You can access the stats page freely without authentication.
How can the solution that falko gave work? He is essentially turning pretty permalinks off for the site. Are you alright with that?

WordPress Options -Indexes I thought that commenting out the "RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]" near the end was sufficient, but if i don't add the two lines about the error documents, nothing works. As soon this two lines are added authentication works. The only issue is that if you press cancel on the authentication pop up, a blank page is displayed with the "./failed_auth.html" as text.
I have figured this out after hours of searching. The problem occurs with the password protected directory. This sends a 401 error to the client. WordPress then captures that error and tells you that it does not exists. To prevent this from happening, add this to the very top of your .htaccess file before the rewrite rules from WordPress. Code: ErrorDocument 401 default When you add that in, you should be able to get the stats directory to load. I have gotten this working on 5 or 6 of my WordPress sites.
