is there a set of commands i can run to unpackage the backup it made back into the right folders so i can get the old version up and running again?

You have to run update script again. But if your backup is the one the update script made, I think it overwrites the one you already have in /var/backup. So you should save that first because that backup is from a working system, whereas now it would be from a non-working system.
EDIT: actually looks like there is a new subdirectory in /var/backup for each. so it does not overwrite.

i take it there is no way to easily undo the addition of the ssl cert?

I do not know how it is removed. My guess is remove the certificate files.
What about amavis, is it running on your host?

The ISPConfig update instructions have advice on how to restore in the comments:

I do not know. From what I read about CentOS just now, version 7 does have the systemctl command. So either your version is older that CentOS 7, it is not CentOS at all or something else. Did you run systemctl as root? Or was it your mate who did the commands?

To make sure amavis is running:
    Code:
    /etc/init.d/amavisd status

    Do a
or whatever the mail log file is in CentOS (probable you have version 6.x). Then try logging in to webmail and sending e-mail to yourself. See what happens in that tail -f window. Them maybe is revealed what is wrong with e-mails.

OK, so maybe it is not CentOS 6, That command should work there.

You seem to run a virtual host under VMWare, Did you take an image copy of the host before this upgrade? That would get you back the same system you had. But you would lose for example e-mails that have arrived after the vmware backup.
