Reference your last post after deleting previous downloads I downloaded as instructed by you and started the how to install process as per your tutorial and this is what went I went to Terminal and entered the first command;
ernest@ernest-desktop:~$ cd /home/falko/Desktop/
bash: cd: /home/falko/Desktop/: No such file or directory
ernest@ernest-desktop:~$
I then clicked on to the new icon:/home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz and after opening a succession of files I got to the tar:/home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb and went to the install stage when I got this message:
dpkg -i '///home/ernest/.kpackage/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb' ;echo RESULT=$?
dpkg: regarding .../openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb containing openoffice.org-debian-menus:

Further to my earlier email, after sending itI noticed that a second Icon had appeared on my desktop which read: /home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358

I opened this Icon until I got to the Package Installer-Openoffice.org-debian-menus and an Error Message which stated: Conflicts with the installed package 'openoffice.org-core'

This is the same stage as we got to in our previous attempt which seems to indicate that version 3.0.0 does not want to be installed alongside the installed one.

I have received the book that I sent for and am now acquainting my self with the Ubuntu O S.

It seems to be installed now.

Don't know why you typed in that command, but that doesn't matter.

 

How to Install OpenOffice Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

You state that it seems to be installed now. At the top of page 2 of your How to install instructions you state: Go to /opt/openoffice.org3/program and pick soffice (/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice): but where do I find /opt/openoffice.org3/program so that I can proceed to complete the installation? This is the step that follows on from the last stage at the bottom of page 1 if one is not going to uninstall the existing version 2.4.

Open your file manager (under Places) and navigate to the /opt/openoffice.org3/program folder, then double-click on soffice.

 

How to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Falko,

There is no such folder in Places, the only OpenOffice.Org folder is:
/home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358
In Applications there are four OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 icons and udrer Office three more but none of them can be launched.
Would it be advisable to delete all current OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 installations and start again from the beginning by downloading the Linux Deb platform as in your tutorial and then follow it through?

You must navigate out of your home folder. Please take a second look at the file explorer, and you should find out how to do it.

Thank you for your latest post and I can confirm that I have already done as you have suggested without success. In Places there is a folder:/home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358
Navigating out of this I eventually get to: /home/ernest/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/desktop-integration and when I go one step further I get the folder:
/home/ernest/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb which the takes me to the Package Installer which has the error message: Conflicts with the installed package 'openoffice.org-core'
Nowhere can I find the /opt/openoffice.org3/program folder to proceed to soffice.
This is the list of folders that I get at one stage while navigating:

Although I know very little about Ubuntu I still think that there is a conflict with the installed dversion.
On my Desktop I have another OpenOffice.org folder:
/home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb(2).tar.gz
Navigating out of this opens OpenOffice.Org 2.4 which seems to confirm this.

I think you must try a little bit harder - it's really not that difficult.

Anyway, open a terminal and run

Code:

/opt/openoffice.org3/program/soffice

and openOffice3 should start.
