    My sites are in the following directories
    srv/www/web1/web
    srv/www/web2/web
    srv/www/web3/web
    srv/www/web4/web

    This is where i have put the .htaccess file.

    On my Windows sever the .htaccess file is in

    C:\Apache\htdocs\mysites

    and all Mambo sites have 404 SEF installed and all run fine.

    I have tried all the previous .htacces files you suggested but with no luck.
    There has to be something really simple that i am overlooking.:confused:

    I guess it must be a slight change in the .htaccess file...
    Do you get a 404 or a 500 error with the different .htaccess files?
    Is there anything in the Apache error log?

    Thanks falko,
    I deleted everything in the error file then tried each one of the .htaccess files, these are the errors I`am getting.

    You should have something like

    Code:
    <Directory /srv/www/*/web>
        Options +Includes -Indexes
        AllowOverride None
        AllowOverride Indexes AuthConfig Limit FileInfo
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        <Files ~ "^\.ht">
        Deny from all
        </Files>
    </Directory>
    in your Apache configuration. Replace it with this:

    Code:
    <Directory /srv/www/*/web>
        Options +Includes [B][COLOR="Red"]FollowSymLinks[/COLOR][/B] -Indexes
        AllowOverride None
        AllowOverride Indexes AuthConfig Limit FileInfo
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        <Files ~ "^\.ht">
        Deny from all
        </Files>
    </Directory>
    and restart Apache.

    Comment out
    Code:
    mod_gzip_on
    in your .htaccess file.

    Please change this in your Apache configuration:

    Code:
    <Directory /srv/www/*/web>

        [B][COLOR="Red"]AllowOverride None
        AllowOverride Indexes AuthConfig Limit FileInfo[/COLOR][/B]
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        <Files ~ "^\.ht">
        Deny from all
        </Files>
    </Directory>
    to

    Code:
    <Directory /srv/www/*/web>
        Options +Includes FollowSymLinks -Indexes
        [B][COLOR="Red"]AllowOverride All[/COLOR][/B]
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        <Files ~ "^\.ht">
        Deny from all
        </Files>
    </Directory>
    and restart Apache.

    My next problem is that i installed Joomla with safe mode disabled and it works OK until i try to install Virtuemart.
    The component installs OK but the shop isn`t there.
    I noticed this when I tried to migrate a site with phpshop from my windows server i had to manually remove all phpshop components and modules for the site to work also there was a problem with the news feed scroller which also had to be removed.
    I have also tried to install the complete joomla eCommerceEdition package but this results in not being able to view the site front end, but i can log in to the back end
    Any suggestions?

    Are you shure taht all directories where these installers want to write their files to are writable?

    Can you please make a new thread with your next question. Its easier when each thread handles only one problem :)

    I managed to install Mambo.

    But now I have problems with stuff in /web folder. I can't create new folder...not in ISPConfig not through FTP Client. How can I fix this?

    By changing back the owner and group of /srv/www/web17/web. You should only change the ownership of those directories that Apache needs write access for - but instead of changing the owner and group, you could also do a
    Code:
    chmod 777 /path/to/directory
