The controlpanel login is not the ssh login. If you did not have a ssh user yet, then create one in ispconfig under sites > ssh users for your website. Create a user with full access, not a chrooted user.
I've created a Shell User and put chrooted as 'None'. When I log in though via Putty I get an error saying access denied even though i enter the correct username and password. Any suggestions?
