Yes, the interesting thing is that there were no recent updates of that package but the issue started to appear just recently and now effects even Debian 9 and not just Debian 10. So a few weeks ago, there was no problem to install phpmyadmin and roundcube on debian 9 and as I did a new setup 2 days ago, it was not possible anymore due to this issue. So it's most likely that some other changes in Debian or in bash or wherever triggered the issue now as there was no dbcommon update.

Marius submitted a merge request here: https://salsa.debian.org/debian/dbconfig-common/merge_requests/2

Thanks for this, I have had the same problem trying to get this on Ubuntu and have spent over a week trying to get to the bottom of it. I even tried installing PHPmyAdmin and Roundcube manually but that raised other issues. This has solved the problem an saved the remainder of my hair!!

Are you sure? The error this thread is about is supposed to have been fixed a year ago, and it was a Debian bug. Is your Ubuntu 20.04 updated to latest? What shows
    Code:
    sudo apt update
Have you tried using the autoinstaller? https://www.howtoforge.com/ispconfig-autoinstall-debian-ubuntu/
You should show exactly how your installation fails, not just say you have the same error.
