    Omg!!!!

OMG!! I can't believe it, I got the damn thing to work!! I recompiled the kernel without DRM support as suggested here:
    http://www.design-to-use.de/linux/amilo_a1630/radeon9700.php
    and now check this out:
    wraithfire@Hellfury:~$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON X800 XL Generic
    OpenGL version string: 2.0.5695 (8.23.7)

    wraithfire@Hellfury:~$ fgl_glxgears
    Using GLX_SGIX_pbuffer
    6310 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1262.000 FPS
    7109 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1421.800 FPS
    7080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1416.000 FPS
    7108 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1421.600 FPS
    7108 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1421.600 FPS

    wraithfire@Hellfury:~$ fgl_glxgears -fbo
    Using GL_EXT_framebuffer_object
    9886 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1977.200 FPS
    11694 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2338.800 FPS
    11693 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2338.600 FPS
    11702 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2340.400 FPS
    11710 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2342.000 FPS

    wraithfire@Hellfury:~$ glxgears
    34215 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6843.000 FPS
    40614 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8122.800 FPS
    40619 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8123.800 FPS
    40615 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8123.000 FPS
    40619 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8123.800 FPS

I'm using an ati x800xl pci-e card with 2x512MB dual channel DDR Ram and an AMD athlon64 3000+ on a DFI Lanparty UT NF4 Ultra-D mainboard. Not sure how great this really is for this system's potential, but it's a HELL of a lot better than what it was before:)
Any how, thanks for all the help Falco, I REALLY appreciate it!! No way I could have gotten my system running without your help! Thanks for helping me get the chance to experience life from a non Windows viewpoint:)
Any other suggestions or comments you have for me are always welcome.
BTW, you have any reccomendations for any benchmark type sites i should check out?

I am having very similar problems installing the ATI driver for a FireGL v7300 board. Could you please summarize all the steps that you executed to get the ATI driver to work?

I have tried many methods that have been posted, but none has worked for me.

    I am desperate.

    Thanks,

    Achilles

I tried to follow the whole thread, but you have gone through many different machinations and it's difficult to follow precisely. Also, I have trouble following the steps described in thne German article. Again, please summarize.

    Many thanks,
    Achilles
