Hi, I am running ispconfig3 on a dell server. my ISP (cox) blocks port 80. is there a way to change the port instead of 80 for http and for website to load and work? how can i do this? any tutorial? thank you ben
no, port 80 is the well known port for http connections, and all web browsers will use that unless the url indicates a different port. Eg. http://site.com/ will always use port 80, https://site.com/ will always use port 443, and http://site.com:1234/ will use port 1234.
thank you, i guess i will just get a business internet line, its more expensive, a lot slower speeds but it will have to do.
There are other options, eg. use a vpn service so you have a public ip somewhere else and tunnel everything to you over that. Your ISP's contract might say you're supposed to buy a business line to run a server, though.
do you know of a such a vpn service you can recommend that is fast and reliable?? so event though my server is in my house on a fast residential internet, i can have a vpn that gives me a static ip, can run my server through that and would i also be able to send and receive emails with that vpn service? i use pfsense as my router, i would simply connect to the vpn service and everything will be using that ip from that service?
Personally I would not host a web server at home or in office anymore. There are so many cheap vserver providers available that it might be cheaper for you to get a vserver somewhere in a datacenter then getting a business line.
the problem is i was using a vps service but i added a very complicated match making website which uses a lot of resources. with teh vps i was paying $40 a month for a good one, but still it was loading slowly. with my dell server i just bought, it loads like a charm, super fast! its a dedicated server. i anyways need internet at home, so for the extra $30 a month i can get a business internet at home. it only has an upload of 5 mb but that will have to do for now. i am waiting for fiber to come out in my area, they are just taking too long! but its in the process!
