Ubuntu and ISPConfig upgrade path advice needed

    Hi all
    I currently have 2 servers running Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS and ISPConfig 3.0.5.4p8. I want to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and ISPConfig 3.1.1p1. What are users experiences upgrading and what steps were taken and in what order? Any advice would be appreciated so I don't repeat mistakes others have made before me.

    These instances are VM's running on Xen hypervisors. Spinning up new VM's and then decommissioning the old VM's after is an option if this would be better. The DB's are using master to master replication.

    upgrade ubuntu on both servers and update ispconfig afterwards. ispconfig < 3.1 will not run on ubuntu 16
