i can neither receive nor send emails but i don't get any errors. (using Mandrake on perfect setup.) The nameserver used is 123-reg but the dns info is correct. I have checked that the dns is correct using dnsstuff.com and got.. Trying to connect to all mailservers: mail.tidy-hosting.com. - 84.244.2.100 [Successful connect: Got a good response [250 OK is our friend.]] I have checked that all the mail servers are online which they are (though the DNS server will not go online - another problem) using the status link in the ISP control panel. I have also checked for the file /var/log/mail/info which reads.... Can you try to send an email from an email client and at the same time have a look at /var/log/mail/info and maybe post appropriate log entries here? Are there also other log files in /var/log/mail? Maybe an error and a warnings log?

I thought so, in fact yes, and it is running, i think. I have just typed.. /etc/init.d/postfix restart and it did Shutting down postfix: [ok] Starting postfix: [ok] However when I typed /etc/init.d/masqmail restart it did Shutting down Masqmail: [ok] Starting Masqmail: [ok] Please tell me that I won't have to reinstall everything again. Ben
I have also noticed that in the ispconfig web interface the setting say that: MTA type: Choice of Postfix or Sendmail Virtuserfile: /etc/postfix/virtusertable Sendmail CW: /etc/postfix/local-host-names I don't know if that helps.

Ok, you have masqmail running on the smtp port (25) instead of Postfix; Postfix is running on port 10026 instead. Is this maybe some kind of spam filtering setup? (masqmail receives emails, forwards them to a spam filter that in turn pipes them into Postfix?) However, Postfix has to run on port 25, otherwise your setup is not compatible with ISPConfig!
It's in /etc/postfix/master.cf. Don't forget to stop masqmail before (and remove the system startup links for masqmail).
This is the email I now get back from postfix when I send a message. This is the Postfix program at host server1.tidy-hosting.com. Does your postfix main.cf contains the line: mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 and in the smtpd_recipient_restrictions the part: permit_mynetworks
This is what is in main.cf # These are only the parameters changed from a default install # see /etc/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, fuller version of this file. # These are changed by postfix install script readme_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.1.5/README_FILES sample_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.1.5/samples html_directory = /usr/share/doc/postfix-2.1.5/html sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail.postfix setgid_group = postdrop command_directory = /usr/sbin manpage_directory = /usr/share/man daemon_directory = /usr/lib/postfix newaliases_path = /usr/bin/newaliases.postfix mailq_path = /usr/bin/mailq.postfix queue_directory = /var/spool/postfix mail_owner = postfix # User configurable parameters inet_interfaces = all mynetworks_style = host delay_warning_time = 4h smtpd_banner = $myhostname ESMTP $mail_name ($mail_version) (Mandrakelinux) unknown_local_recipient_reject_code = 450 smtp-filter_destination_concurrency_limit = 2 lmtp-filter_destination_concurrency_limit = 2 smtpd_sasl_path = /etc/postfix/sasl:/usr/lib/sasl2 smtpd_sasl_local_domain = smtpd_sasl_auth_enable = yes smtpd_sasl_security_options = noanonymous broken_sasl_auth_clients = yes smtpd_recipient_restrictions = permit_sasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauth_destination mydomain = tidy-hosting.com myhostname = server1.$mydomain mydestination = /etc/postfix/local-host-names, localhost.tidy-hosting.com smtpd_tls_auth_only = no smtpd_use_tls = yes smtp_use_tls = yes smtp_tls_note_starttls_offer = yes smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtpd.key smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/postfix/ssl/smtpd.crt smtpd_tls_CAfile = /etc/postfix/ssl/cacert.pem smtpd_tls_loglevel = 1 smtpd_tls_received_header = yes smtpd_tls_session_cache_timeout = 3600s tls_random_source = dev:/dev/urandom virtual_maps = hash:/etc/postfix/virtusertable
Oops. I have solved part of the problem with receiving emails. I had the mailserver set as external mailserver in ISPConfig web settings for the site. But I still can't send messages and I still get the same message in /etc/log/mail/info as before. I so feel a bit of a prat though. Ben
Add this to your main.cf: mynetworks = 127.0.0.0/8 and then restart your postfix server: /etc/init.d/postfix restart
Yet again you solved the problem. You ISP Config guru's deserve some kind of nobel peace prize. Thanks again for your help. Ben
